Just a little over a year ago, Zach Wahls stood before the
Iowa House Judiciary Committee, introducing legislators to his family, which includes his two moms, Terry and Jackie. Through his three-minute, heartfelt testimony against a proposed amendment which would reverse the right of gay couples to marry in Iowa, the 19-year-old honored his parents’ commitment, became an icon in the fight for equality, and changed how people define the word “family.”
Wahls' testimony quickly became an Internet sensation, with more than 16 million views on YouTube. While his speech touched millions, it particularly resonated with children of same-sex parents whose message of tolerance was now broadcast worldwide.
Children’s author and artist Kadir Nelson will speak at St. Louis
County Library Headquarters on Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. Mr. Nelson is author of “Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African-Americans,” winner of the 2012 Coretta Scott King Book Award.
Local author Amy Sklansky will read from her latest book, Out of This World: Poems and Facts About Space. Sklansky is also the author of You Are My Little Cupcake.
Along with sharing several poems and facts from the book, Sklansky will share from her other books, as well as answer questions about writing the book and her writing process.

Fazio’s Rock Academy is the summer destination for the aspiring rock star in your life! Campers attend one-week or two-week sessions (8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. daily) where they form a real band, choose a band name, write their own music, pose for a photo shoot and conclude with a live concert with special guest appearances by professional rock artists!
