Back-To-School Festival

Free backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to students while supplies last. In addition, games, rides, gifts, prizes, and free food will be available for all attendees.

The St. Louis Public School District will once again join forces with the St. Louis Community Empowerment Foundation to present the 2012 St. Louis Public Schools Back to School & Community Empowerment Festival on Saturday, August 4, from 9 am until 1 p.m.  The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is serving as a co-sponsor of this year’s festival.   
 

More Than Band-Aids: What School Nurses Do for You

There are some places kids just don’t want to be at school:

  1. The principal’s office.  2. Indoors at recess. 3. The nurse’s office.

While I can’t help much with #1 or #2, there’s certainly nothing to fear about #3. In fact, the nurse might just be a pretty nice person who actually enjoys seeing kids when they’re healthy.

St. Louis Public Schools Receive Grant to Provide iPads to Kids in Autism Program

The St. Louis Public School District has been awarded a grant valued at $10,900 from the Innovative Technology Education Fund to provide iPads in six self-contained autism classrooms serving students in grades 9-12 at Gateway Institute of Technology High School.
 
Known as the Learning and Communicating Using iPads Project, the District will incorporate the iPads into instructional learning by utilizing applications recommended by Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, and by providing two full days of technical training for teachers and paraprofessionals by Apple, the creator of the iPad.

Developmental Disability Awareness Art Fair

The fair will feature artwork from students that reflects their perception of developmental disabilities.

The 11th annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Art Fair will be held Friday, March 4 at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar Blvd.

The objective of the fair is to have students from St. Louis Public Schools create artwork that reflects their perception of developmental disabilities. Students participating are from Gateway Elementary, Shaw Elementary, McKinley Middle and Community Access Job Training.

The 10th Annual St. Louis Public Schools’ Art Fair will be held February 25th through March 11th at the Saint Louis Zoo. The Art Exhibit is free and open to the public. This district-wide art competition is a cross-curricular, research-based project concerning animals in their natural environment in which the visual arts are connected with science, social studies, and communication arts.

Fazio’s Rock Academy

Fazio’s Rock Academy is the summer destination for the aspiring rock star in your life! Campers attend one-week or two-week sessions (8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. daily) where they form a real band, choose a band name, write their own music, pose for a photo shoot and conclude with a live concert with special guest appearances by professional rock artists! Fazio's Rock Academy is for Guitarists, Vocalists, Bassists and Keyboardists between the ages of 9-17 years.

Two sessions are offered: July 15-19; and July 22-26. Each session is $399, which includes print music and a t-shirt. Ask about a discounted rate for two-week enrollment.
