Free, back-to-school vision screenings will be offered
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4-5, at the Saint Louis Science Center, sponsored by the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation. Screenings are for children ages six months to 6 years of age. will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5.
No appointment is necessary. Screening for vision problems takes just minutes and is completely non-invasive. Trained Foundation staff technicians use a hand-held scanner to screen a child’s eyes, and the automated system reviews the results to immediately produce a pass or refer report.
If a child shows symptoms of a vision condition, the parents are encouraged to take him or her to an eye doctor for a follow-up eye examination. Last year, 225 children were screened at the Science Center event.
The Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation is dedicated to helping kids start off the school year with better vision. Since 1995, the Foundation has screened 240,000 children, including 7,000 in the St. Louis region last year, for amblyopia, otherwise known as “lazy eye,” and other vision conditions through its free Children’s Vision Screening program.
