Night Sky Over Trout Lodge Weekend

Event Date:
Fri, 09/16/2011 - Sun, 09/18/2011

YMCA Trout Lodge partners with the St. Louis Astronomical Society to bring you an astronomy themed weekend. Whether you’re a novice star-gazer or avid astronomer there will be something for everyone as YMCA Trout Lodge looks to the sky! Evening telescope viewing will be offered Friday and Saturday nights with amateur astronomers from the St. Louis Astronomical Society will make their telescopes available for viewing objects in the evening sky.

On Saturday morning, amateur astronomers from the St. Louis Astronomical Society will setup a “solar” telescope designed for safe viewing of the sun. This will be followed by an Astronomy Clinic on Saturday afternoon where attendees will learn about telescopes and how to use them, and a one-hour presentation "Starlight Nights: A Tour of the Evening Sky." The program will be presented by Rich Heuermann from the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences of Washington University St. Louis. The presentation is designed for anyone with an interest in exploring the night sky with binoculars, a telescope or even the unaided eye. Constellations such as Ursa Major, Cygnus and Scorpius will be discussed including what they are and how to trace them in the night sky.

Sept. 16-18 at YMCA Trout Lodge and Camp Lakewood. More information: www.ymcaoftheozarks.org

YMCA Trout Lodge and YMCA Camp Lakewood are known collectively as YMCA of the Ozarks, a branch of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis. All programs at Trout Lodge are based on the YMCA's four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
