Yeee-ouch! Who Knew a Simple Bandage Could Be So Complicated?

So yesterday my son was racing a neighbor kid toward a hammock and wound up skidding down the sidewalk on his elbows and hips. What started out as a pretty typical summertime bang-up led to a serious debate about the merits of various bandages.

It turns out that parents have strong beliefs about what’s in their medicine cabinets.

Roller Coasters, Funnel Cakes and the Murtaugh List

Due to a lull in our finances, the Plegges’ vacation has been limited to a St. Louis staycation. My six-year-old, MJ, received a free Six Flags ticket through her school reading program, so we decided to take her, my 12-year-old niece and 9-year-old nephew on “vacation” to the park. The kids were over the moon – mom, not so much.

A Special GiFT for Families in the NICU

As a pediatric and neonatal nurse, Jennifer Krassinger has worked closely with families in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) since 1999, helping them understand their infants’ medical conditions from a clinical perspective and teaching them how to take care of a critically ill child both in and out of the hospital.

Art and Nature Make for a Unique Camp Experience at Laumeier Sculpture Park

Summer is a great time for kids and teens to explore their creative side! Laumeier Sculpture Park offers art camps that let kids create all kinds of art while enjoying some of the old-fashioned joys of summer — like hiking and swimming.

Because of the unique park setting at Laumeier, campers spend lots of time exploring woodland trails, the outdoor permanent collection of art and the sculpture park's changing exhibits.

The Soda Ban: It’s a Sticky Situation

If you’re anything like me, when the nights are short and the days grow long, sometimes you just want to head to your neighborhood joint for a drink. The one where everybody knows your name and they hook you up with the good stuff.

That's why, at least twice a week, I burn off steam at my local QT where I have a multitude of icy-cold, high fructose corn syrup beverages at my disposal. My go-to is a 22-ouncer, packed with caramel color and caffeine, served on the rocks.

As with any vice that gives us pleasure – like street gambling or talking smack about a Kardashian – The Man is attempting to curb our fun through legislation. And this time, they’re on track to put the kibosh on our soda fix.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a 16-ounce limit on any sugar-filled drink, including sodas, sweetened teas, and energy drinks, that contains more than 25 calories per eight ounces and is sold at a restaurant, movie theater or other food service outlet. That means New Yorkers will have little more than one can of soda to sustain them through Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and even crazier, no free refills!

Thanks to My Apps, I Feel Safer Already

There must be something genetic about a fascination with summer storms. Both my boys will stay glued to YouTube tornado videos for hours, and their cousin just finished a college course that involved driving across the Midwest chasing tornados. Yes, that’s right – her parents’ tuition dollars, hard at work.

See the New Movie BRAVE and Help Support the Brave Kids at St. Louis Crisis Nursery

Help change the fate of Crisis Nursery's deserving babies, children and families by attending a special screening of Disney Pixar's new feature film Brave.

Celebrate the Fourth of July in St. Louis at one of the Area's Family-Friendly Festivals

Some things, like fine wine, just get better with age. Our wonderful country is no exception. Celebrate her 236th birthday with a bang during a family-friendly Fourth of July celebration.

Dance In the Streets During Macklind Days

There’s nothing South St. Louisians like better than an old fashioned street festival. So warm up your washer-throwing arm, lace up your running shows and head down to SOHA’s (South Hampton’s) Macklind Days.

Now in its third year, this annual event was started to showcase and promote local businesses during a family-friendly, neighborhood festival. The fun kicks off with one of the area’s most unique races, The Macklind Avenue Mile. With over 1,500 runners in 2011, this downhill run is the area’s largest one-mile road race.

How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Game

I’ll probably get hate mail for saying this in a town like ours, but I've never been a big baseball fan.

In St. Louis, that’s pretty much the equivalent of saying I hate America and apple pie.

Don’t get me wrong – I have respect for baseball and even greater respect for the St. Louis Cardinals. There are so many elements of the sport I’ve loved since childhood – the history and the tradition and the camaraderie. I love the energy as the fans pour into the stadium and the good-natured ribbing of the Cubs fans who enter our midst.

But the game itself, ehhhh.

Movies Under the Stars for St. Louis Families

Camera! Lights! Action! It’s time to enjoy a free movie under the starry summer sky. Spend your Fridays in July on Art Hill with the Saint Louis Art Museum’s Outdoor Film Series. The party starts at 7 p.m. with food, music and festivities on Art Hill Plaza. A Monty Python, Hitchcock, Beatles or Bond movie will give you a much needed blast from the past.

It's Mother's Day in June at Purina Farms

In no particular order, food, shopping and fun are three of my favorite things. If you feel the same way, head out to the Moms’ Market at Purina Farms on June 21.

Wrapping New Parents with TLC

The stork has been busy around here lately! From my North City friend who delivered a perfect baby daughter (at home, sans drugs, you go, girl!) to a South City couple who welcomed the cutest twins ever (via the beautiful generosity of a surrogate mother), my Facebook feed has been full of baby news.

The timing has me in a reflective mood, because five years ago this month − about a year after my youngest son was born − I realized I had postpartum depression.

Take a Bite Out of Summer During Food Truck Friday

What’s for dinner? A spicy pork sandwich? Carne Asada? Salted caramel cupcakes? How about all of the above!

Instead of making multiple meals for all the picky eaters in your family, head over to Sauce Magazine’s Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park. While the food truck craze has taken off on the coasts, the scene in St. Louis is just heating up.

Metro East Mom is Restoring Hope for Kids in Developing Countries

Eight thousand miles from St. Louis, in a Ugandan village, Charles, an intelligent teen who graduated top of his class, was facing a life of poverty and desperation.

His family had little money to feed the six hungry mouths in his home, let alone send Charles to a university to continue his education to provide for his loved ones.
