Celebrate the Fourth of July in St. Louis at one of the Area's Family-Friendly Festivals

Some things, like fine wine, just get better with age. Our wonderful country is no exception. Celebrate her 236th birthday with a bang during a family-friendly Fourth of July celebration.

Dance In the Streets During Macklind Days

There’s nothing South St. Louisians like better than an old fashioned street festival. So warm up your washer-throwing arm, lace up your running shows and head down to SOHA’s (South Hampton’s) Macklind Days.

Now in its third year, this annual event was started to showcase and promote local businesses during a family-friendly, neighborhood festival. The fun kicks off with one of the area’s most unique races, The Macklind Avenue Mile. With over 1,500 runners in 2011, this downhill run is the area’s largest one-mile road race.

How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Game

I’ll probably get hate mail for saying this in a town like ours, but I've never been a big baseball fan.

In St. Louis, that’s pretty much the equivalent of saying I hate America and apple pie.

Don’t get me wrong – I have respect for baseball and even greater respect for the St. Louis Cardinals. There are so many elements of the sport I’ve loved since childhood – the history and the tradition and the camaraderie. I love the energy as the fans pour into the stadium and the good-natured ribbing of the Cubs fans who enter our midst.

But the game itself, ehhhh.

Movies Under the Stars for St. Louis Families

Camera! Lights! Action! It’s time to enjoy a free movie under the starry summer sky. Spend your Fridays in July on Art Hill with the Saint Louis Art Museum’s Outdoor Film Series. The party starts at 7 p.m. with food, music and festivities on Art Hill Plaza. A Monty Python, Hitchcock, Beatles or Bond movie will give you a much needed blast from the past.

It's Mother's Day in June at Purina Farms

In no particular order, food, shopping and fun are three of my favorite things. If you feel the same way, head out to the Moms’ Market at Purina Farms on June 21.

Wrapping New Parents with TLC

The stork has been busy around here lately! From my North City friend who delivered a perfect baby daughter (at home, sans drugs, you go, girl!) to a South City couple who welcomed the cutest twins ever (via the beautiful generosity of a surrogate mother), my Facebook feed has been full of baby news.

The timing has me in a reflective mood, because five years ago this month − about a year after my youngest son was born − I realized I had postpartum depression.

Take a Bite Out of Summer During Food Truck Friday

What’s for dinner? A spicy pork sandwich? Carne Asada? Salted caramel cupcakes? How about all of the above!

Instead of making multiple meals for all the picky eaters in your family, head over to Sauce Magazine’s Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park. While the food truck craze has taken off on the coasts, the scene in St. Louis is just heating up.

Metro East Mom is Restoring Hope for Kids in Developing Countries

Eight thousand miles from St. Louis, in a Ugandan village, Charles, an intelligent teen who graduated top of his class, was facing a life of poverty and desperation.

His family had little money to feed the six hungry mouths in his home, let alone send Charles to a university to continue his education to provide for his loved ones.

How One Little Cow at the Saint Louis Zoo is Teaching Kids Self-Confidence

In life, it’s inevitable – one’s head tends to be turned by the new and the exciting. At the Saint Louis Zoo, it’s no different. Families are flocking to see the baby lion cubs and get their hands on the visiting stingrays, perhaps not making time to visit the Zoo’s more established inhabitants.

Well, not anymore!

Time to Get Your Worry On

Liz, a mother of two, is nervous. Her palms are sweaty, her pulse is racing, and a million thoughts fill her head as she clicks her mouse.

Yep – Liz is hanging out with Dr. Google again.

Learn About the Amazing World of Nanotechnology at the Saint Louis Science Center

Delve into a world of objects too small to be seen by the naked eye during the Amazing Nano Worlds! exhibit at the St. Louis Science Center. In a world of super-sized value meals, over the top productions and larger-than-life celebrities, the microscopic nano packs a big punch.

Kick Up Your Heels at a Countrytime Festival

What do you get when you blend downhome music, cloggers and wacky games? The Countrytime Bluegrass Festival and Kid's Country Carnival at Purina Farms! Enjoy one of the area’s most versatile preforming groups, George Portz & “Friends of Bluegrass”, as they mix their fiery Bluegrass roots with some fine traditional Irish and Louisiana Cajun music.

Harvest the Bounties of Summer at one of St. Louis' Many Farmers Markets

Extended daylight hours, warm weather, no homework and the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables are some of the best parts of summer. While we can’t guarantee perfect temperatures from mother nature, finding vine ripened tomatoes, juicy peaches and succulent squash at a local farmer’s market is pretty much a sure thing.

Get Hooked on Fishing This Summer

There’s an old saying that a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work. But if you don’t know the difference between a black crappie and brown trout, where do you start?

The fine folks at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area will help your family learn to fish with hook, line, sinker, bobber, live worms and bait. You’ll get the basics on successfully catching, handling fish and removing hooks for catch and release fishing.

Saying C U to BFF and GCB

I think I’ve made it abundantly clear that I like TV. While I try to culture it up with a little reading (The Bloggess’ Let’s Pretend This Never Happened) or a little classic music (Color Me Badd’s first album), my heart still beats for basic cable.
