Build It and They Will Come

In the 1989 blockbuster film Field of Dreams, Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) builds a baseball field in the middle of a cornfield after a disembodied voice urges him to “Build it, and they will come.” Maybe that’s what happened to the masterminds behind one of the most unique food charities in the world, CANstruction.

During CANstruction’s annual competition, local teams of architects, engineers and students have just one day to build elaborate, self-supporting sculptures almost entirely from canned goods. On Friday, teams from Arcturis, Charter, Mayville University Department of Interiors, McClure Engineering and other area companies will be descending upon the Saint Louis Science Center to creating amazing works of art from cans of soup, vegetables and tuna. This year’s CANstruction theme, “Climate Change and Endangered Animals,” was chosen to complement the current Climate Change exhibition at the Science Center.

Completed structures will be on public display from March 19 to 28. Categories include Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Jurors' Favorite, Peoples' Choice, Best use of Save-A-Lot Labels plus two Honorable Mentions. Awards will be presented at the Decanstruction event on the evening of March 28.

Vote for your favorite designs by donating cans at the exhibit. The sculpture with the most cans at the end of the event will win the People’s Choice award. Besides putting your two cents in, you’ll also receive $1 off of any OMNIMAX® film.

Once the sculptures are deconstructed, all of the canned goods used are donated to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry and the St. Louis Area Foodbank. One of the major sponsors of the event, Save-A-Lot Food Stores, will also match donations for every can donated at their stores. Last year, St. Louis donated 42,720 pounds of food — that’s equivalent to 34,176 meals. We ranked a respectable ninth out of 180 participating cities.

For more information on the 11th annual CANstruction, please visit the St Louis Science Center’s website or give them a call at (314) 289-4400. If you want a peek of structures form past events, visit CANstruction’s website.
