The Joy of Reading

School textbooks aside, do Facebook, text messages and Glamour magazine make up your teenager’s repertoire of reading materials? Help get your teen on the path of reading for enjoyment during St. Louis County Library’s Teen Read Week. This year’s theme, “Books with Beat @ Your Library,” encourages kids to get out of their literary safety zone and give poetry, audiobooks and books about music a try.

During the third week of the month, Oct. 17 to 23, St. Louis County Library branches around the area are offering special events and programs to encourage teens to read for the fun of it. Learn self defense at Bridgeton Trails or enjoy a pizza party and come home with a new book at the Oak Bend Book Swap Pizza Party. Gleeks are invited to the Daniel Boone branch for Glee-inspired karaoke, trivia, and treats.

Check out all the events being offered during Teen Read Week.

Kids also have a chance to win a trip to WrestleMania in Atlanta next year. All they have to do is pledge to read five books or graphic novels by April 2011 and complete a project. Upon pledge fulfillment, participants will receive five TOPPS Slam Attax Cards and a WrestleMania Poster. Fifth- and sixth-graders are required to design a bookmark illustrating a slogan created by them that promotes reading. Kids in grades seven through 12 can use art, drawing, collage, poetry and writing to describe how their dream team of a favorite character from literature and WWE Superstar could defeat the current WWE Tag Team Champions. Pick up a WrestleMania Reading Challenge Pledge Form at any St. Louis County Library branch during Teen Read Week or e-mail teenzone@slcl.org to request a form.

Reading just doesn’t happen at libraries. Here are some tips to celebrate Teen Read Week at home:

  • Visit a library with your teenager to attend a program or check out books.
  • Set time aside each night for family read time.
  • Give magazine subscriptions or books to your kids as a gift or reward.
  • Share your favorite book with your teenager.
  • Visit YALSA’s (Young Adult Library Services Association) Booklists and Book Awards page with your teenager to learn about new books and authors.
  • Join a book discussion group.
