Meet the Butterflies

Some of you may remember my post from early this summer about the Muny’s performance of Beauty and the Beast to benefit Wings in the City, a public display of painted butterflies. It was developed to raise funds for BJC’s Pediatric Palliative Care program, Wings, which provides emotional, spiritual and clinical support to children with progressive, life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses.

In partnership with a sponsoring individual or organization, over 50 local artists have each painted a 5-foot-by-4-foot fiberglass butterfly for Wings in the City. All those beautiful butterflies have landed in Forest Park for their unveiling. For one day only, you will be able to view all 54 butterflies in one place. After that, they are taking flight to other destinations in St. Louis in the spring.

When you arrive at Wings in the City, make sure the kids pick up their passport for the “I Spy A Butterfly” scavenger hunt.

Youngsters can also make butterfly magnets, decorate magnifying glasses and create a butterfly ring. And what’s a party without some live entertainment? The Muny Kids, Muny Teens, Babaloo, AIM dancers and Rams cheerleaders will all be performing throughout the day. After you work up an appetite from all this fun, grab a snack from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, St. Louis Snow Cones or Holy Crepe. Hot dogs, shish kabobs and funnel cakes will also be available for purchase.

The Wings in the City butterflies are making their debut On Sunday, Oct. 10, at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event is open to the public. For more information, please visit the Wings in the City website.
