There have been a lot of fun biking events lately – the History Bike Ride on Grant’s Trail, Apple Pie Bike Tour, Gateway Cup and Moonlight Ramble to name a few.
Let’s squeeze in a few more outings before the weather turns cold. My fellow SmartParenting blogger Nicole may even find herself tempted to join in! Two St. Louis Open Streets events are taking place in the next few weeks. During these free community events, miles of city streets are shut down to vehicular traffic and opened up to runners, walkers, bikers and roller bladers. Even your leashed furry friends are invited to join in on the fun.
Hubs located along the routes will be offering strength training, hula-hooping, yoga, dog training, zumba, mini massages, blood pressure screening, stretching instructions, cooking demonstrations, contests and more!
The next Open Streets event is Sunday, Sept. 19. You’ll start your adventure at Tower Grove Park and finish at Busch Stadium. The 6-mile route takes you past The Grove, Grand Center, Central West End, Downtown and Citygarden. Participants can start at any point of the route at any time. At 11 a.m., RadioDisney will be hosting games, exercise activities, contests and giveaways just for the kids at the corner of 9th and Chestnut. Click here for a schedule of all events.
Since the road is leading you to the ballpark, take advantage of specially priced tickets to the Cardinals-San Diego Padres game that day. Tickets are available at the Cardinal’s website. If you bike to the game, secure and free bike parking will be available from 11 a.m. to one hour after game time at Clark Street and Broadway. Come early and stop by a pre-game tailgate party from 11 a.m. to noon at Clark Street and Broadway.
The final Open Streets of 2010 is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 9. You’ll loop through the Old North St. Louis’ 14th Street Mall, the Arch Grounds, Citygarden, Downtown and the Riverfront Trail.
Both of these Open Streets events run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Remember to bring water and sunscreen. Cyclists should also bring a helmet, bike lock and patch kit and pump. For more information, please visit the website.
